Figments had a fantastic opening reception with something like 50-60 visitors! You can still come look at the work through July 31. The gallery is open Wendesdays and Fridays 2-6 and Saturdays 10-2, or by chance or appointment.

Figments at Azure Rising

I am so excited to be having my very first solo show! It will include a wide range of my work, from portraits, to collages, to fantasy art, and several as-yet-unseen pieces from an exciting new project I’ve been working on. (More details later.) The gallery is a beautiful space, and has exhibited a lot of lovely, unique work. Take a look at their website.

Wolfeboro artist Emily Marsh exhibits a range of pieces from the fantasical to the whimsical to the seriously reflective in her exhibit “Figments: Illustrations of Fantasy and Reality” at the Azure Rising Gallery in Wolfeboro. The exhibit runs July 10-31 with an opening reception Friday, July 10, 5:00 to 7:00.

Marsh believes that, “When given the opportunity, viewers take very real ideas—hopes and fears and revelations—and translate them directly into what we call ‘fantasy art.’ Even if it’s unconscious, I believe this process can be very therapeutic, which is why fantasy books and movies feel so good to get wrapped up in.”

In addition to fantasy and science fiction pieces, her recent work includes a calendar series based on New Hampshire, and an unconventional collage series—a visual interpretation of issues that come up for young people in our culture. Her illustrations appear in Too Hot for Santa, a children’s book by playwright Bryan Halperin, and on programs and posters for several organizations including Opera New Hampshire.

Marsh is looking forward to meeting the public and discussing her work at the opening reception Friday, July 10, 5:00 to 7:00 at the Azure Rising Gallery, South Main Street, Wolfeboro. Figments will be on display July 10-31; Wednesdays and Fridays, 2:00 to 6:00; Saturday 10:00 to 2:00, or by appointment. Call 603-630-1772 or check emilymarshillustration.com for more information.

The Pill

Alternative health has always been an interest to me. And recently I’ve been especially fixated on one aspect–America’s most common method of birth control–the pill. Maybe this recent study is what set me off. I think it is extremely important for birth control to become more commonly discussed by women and men, whether you support the pill or not.

Calendar Project

Now that I’ve fully transitioned (back) to my home in rural New Hampshire, I’ve really started to appreciate the sweet things that make this place so unique. Even though New Hampshire winters are long and sometimes include more snow than I can mentally handle, I have been so inspired by my charming home the past few months. With that in mind, I’ve started a calendar series that somewhat journals my experience here. Watch out for more pieces, especially as things warm up and I get to illustrate my favorite season.

Starting 2015 with a New Studio!

Studio

After moving from place to place since graduating from New Hampshire Institute of Art this spring, I have finally found myself a studio! This is actually my first private studio, so I anticipate my process to have whole different schedule as I start painting this year.

This is also the first time I’ve been able to get out my oil paints since graduation. To warm up, I painted this loose self-portrait. Stay tuned for more pieces from my new home.

Month of Fear October 2014

I had so much fun participating in this year’s Month of Fear. Even though I was moving between studios, creating some fun small pieces really helped me stay geared up for more painting this winter.

Week 1

Things That Go Bump

I decided to illustrate my greatest childhood fear: the blood-thirsty fox that I wholeheartedly believed lived under my bed. I imagined him appearing out of the darkness and dust bunnies with flashing white teeth. He was always ready to munch on my toes if I ever wanted to climb out of bed.

Week 2

What are you afraid of?

Dates always freak me out at least a little bit. This one’s digital with some scanned textures, including ink for Inktober.

Week 3

Demons Within

The demon Duke Bune was said to have three heads, two in the form of dragons. Conte on toned paper, and digital.

Week 4

Haunted

This week I spent time in this old theater… with the power out. So here is Haunted Theater. Acrylic on board and digital.

Week 5

Masks

There’s a point in every relationship when you have to take off the mask you wear for strangers. Acrylic, watercolor and a touch of digital.

New Voices, Visions, Views Exhibit

Sunday, July 18th, my most recent exhibit opened–New Voices, Visions, Views at Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. This show featured young artists who were enrolled in, or recently graduated from a college in New Hampshire. Several of my friends at New Hampshire Institute of Art had pieces in the show, including Amanda Gotham.

I am exhibiting two pieces in the show–a print of Drawing Dragons, and the original oil of Lightning Dragon. The artwork will be up through September 1, 2014.
